Spray drying is a strategic approach that is commonly used to address bioavailability or crystallization challenges encountered with many drug substances.  This technology is often leveraged from the development scale through commercial manufacture and has enabled a number of approved drug products. While spray drying is a commonly applied manufacturing technique within the pharmaceutical industry, there are specific situations in which unconventional formulation and process strategies are required.

During this webinar, you will hear from a team of global industry experts about:

  • Assessing formulation strategies during early stage drug development, including solvent, carrier and solubilizer selection
  • Determination of equipment specific needs such as nozzle type (e.g., two-fluid, pressure or rotary) and processing design space definition
  • Process transfer and scale-up to commercial scale equipment
  • Case studies

Featured Speakers

Justin R. Hughey, PhD

Sr. Manager, Product Development
Thermo Fisher Scientific

Dr. Hughey has over 15 years of formulation and process development experience with a focus on oral solid dosage forms.  His experience extends from early stage development to scale-up and commercialization of drug products.  He has extensive experience in the areas of spray drying, hot-melt extrusion and other processing techniques to improve bioavailability.  He holds B.S. degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Chemistry as well as a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Sandeep Kumar, PhD

Technical Project Lead, UK
Thermo Fisher Scientific

Sandeep Kumar is a technical project lead at Thermo Fisher, Milton Park UK Site and works on early stage formulation development and technical transfer of oral solid dosage formulation projects. Sandeep has a wide range of experience on formulation technologies including wet/dry granulation, tableting/encapsulation, solubility enhancement techniques such as spray drying systems, hot melt extrusion and lipid-based formulations. Sandeep has over 5 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry gained at Catalent Pharma and Thermo Fisher Scientific.  Sandeep has M.Pharm degree in Pharmaceutics and received his Ph.D. in Pharmacy at Queen’s University Belfast, with specialization on implantable drug delivery systems.

Dr. Billy Edwards

Manager, Manufacturing Products
Thermo Fisher Scientific

Billy has over 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, starting with Roche where he managed production for both commercial products and clinical candidates.  Billy joined Patheon in 2017, where he currently leads a group that manages milling and spray drying processes, along with process engineering, equipment qualification, and cleaning validation for the Florence, South Carolina site.  Billy holds a PhD in chemical engineering.
